About Our Team
MISSION:
Provide a unique hands-on engineering and design experience that will help our members be among their field's most qualified and competitive students. We specifically strive to provide a unique skill set to prepare our members for careers in sustainable energy fields and the electric vehicle field. Additionally, we strive to further develop sustainable technology in an industry that is currently behind in carbon-neutral solutions.
DIVERSITY:
Pittsburgh Electric Propulsion launched its pilot year in September 2021. In our first year, we gained the support of several companies and attracted team members from a wide variety of majors. Although the majority of our team is mechanical or electrical engineering students, we welcomed students from a wider variety of majors. Including, but not limited to, sociology, finance, chemical engineering, materials science, environmental engineering, and computer engineering.
SCHOLARSHIP:
We have had 2 students receive scholarships since forming Pittsburgh Electric Propulsion - 1 from the American Society of Naval Engineers & 1 from Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers Power & Energy Society. We connected numerous students with internship & co-op opportunities.

Our Projects:
"Cathy":Cathy was our pilot project in Pittsburgh Electric Propulsion. Launching in September of 2021, Cathy was entirely designed, manufactured, and raced by members of Pittsburgh Electric Propulsion. Our custom battery was designed and assembled via spot-welding by our team members. Our outboard was a 1968 Mercury Thunderbolt 500.
We stripped the internal combustion system and replaced it with a Moto energy ME1616 motor mounted on an adapter plate that was designed and machined by members of Pittsburgh Electric Propulsion. For a detailed review of the first year of this project, read our end of year newsletter here. |
C-Stock Electric Hydroplane:Our C-Stock Electric Hydroplane was donated to us by Thomas Schlarb, and the Schlarb Racing team. After a 3rd place finish in the Liqui-Moli National Championship, Schlarb Racing will be working along side Pittsburgh Electric Propulsion to make the worlds fastest C-Stock Hydroplane. We will also be working with Engineered Fluids to develop an innovative method for cooling batteries, that we believe will help extract the full potential of our system!
Speed Goals: 70 - 90 mph |
